During the American 2008 presidential election, John McCain dramatically lost to Barack Obama. John McCain had a lot of supporters but he just couldn’t influence as many voters compared with Barack Obama. Although John McCain was a good speaker and had a reputable military background, it wasn’t enough to persuade voters.

Here are three reasons why John McCain lost the 2008 presidential election:

1. He didn’t have a better marketing campaign.

Barack Obama was one of the first few politicians to exploit the internet to market his policy. He was proactive with using social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. Furthermore, this enables him to reach many more people in a short time. However, Mr McCain did have a marketing campaign but it wasn’t as good.

2. He was much older than the opposition.

Being older could be a good thing because you experience a lot of things and that makes you become wiser. However, the American public thought otherwise and thought that due to his age, his health was of a concern. If he was elected president, he would become one of the oldest presidents ever.

3. The Republican Party was unpopular during those times.

Former ex-president George W Bush had one of the worst poll ratings ever for a sitting American president. This made the Republican Party unpopular with the swinging voters. Some Republican strategists have suggested that McCain’s association with Bush was the key reason why he lost. He should’ve break from President Bush from the start of the election.
